Do I Really Need Life Insurance? An Honest Answer

Not everyone needs life insurance. Here is a simple way to tell whether you actually do, based on who depends on your income.

"Do I really need life insurance?" is one of the most common questions people ask online, and the honest answer is: it depends on who would be hurt financially if you were gone.

Life insurance is not for you. It is for the people who depend on you. So the real question is: if your income disappeared tomorrow, would someone you love be in trouble?

You probably need it if any of these are true

  • Someone depends on your income. A spouse, kids, aging parents, anyone who would struggle to pay the bills without you.
  • You have a mortgage or shared debt. A co-signed loan or mortgage does not disappear when you do. Coverage can keep your family in the home.
  • You have children. Beyond income, there is childcare, education, and the cost of daily life that two incomes (or one income plus your unpaid work) were covering.
  • You own a business with partners or loans tied to you.
  • You want to cover final expenses so your family is not paying for a funeral out of pocket.

You may not need much (or any) if

  • You are single with no dependents and no shared debt.
  • You have enough assets that your loved ones would be fine without a payout.
  • The only "dependents" are fully self-sufficient.

Even then, some people buy a small policy young, while it is inexpensive and while they are healthy, to lock in coverage for the future. That is a personal choice, not a requirement.

The myth that keeps people from getting covered

Many people assume life insurance is expensive. For healthy applicants, term life is often far cheaper than they expect, sometimes less than a streaming bundle or a dinner out per month for meaningful coverage. The only way to know your number is to check.

A simple gut check

Ask yourself: "If I were gone, who writes the checks?" If the answer is "someone I love, and it would hurt," you likely need coverage. If the answer is "no one is affected," you may not, or only a little.

Not sure where you land? You can check what you may qualify for in about a minute, with no obligation, or read how much coverage you might need.

No pressure, no medical exam for many applicants. English or Vietnamese.
