Life Insurance for Immigrant & Non-Citizen Families in Hawaii

Non-citizens and green-card holders can often qualify for life insurance, and you can insure immigrant parents. Here is what to know.

Many immigrant families assume life insurance is not available to them, or get turned away by one company and give up. Here is the reassuring reality: non-citizens, green-card holders, and many visa holders can often qualify for life insurance in the US, and you can usually insure immigrant parents too. It just takes knowing how carriers look at these situations.

This matters deeply in Hawaii, where so many families, including our Vietnamese community, are first or second generation.

"I'm not a citizen, can I even get covered?"

Often, yes. Carriers vary a lot here:

  • Green-card holders (permanent residents) are frequently treated similarly to citizens by many carriers.
  • Visa holders can sometimes qualify, depending on the visa type, time in the US, and the carrier's rules.
  • A Social Security Number or ITIN, US residence, and ties to the country (home, job, family) all help.

The key insight: one carrier saying no does not mean every carrier will. Some companies decline non-citizens outright; others specialize in serving them. Being declined by one is not the end, it is a reason to look at a carrier that fits your situation.

Insuring immigrant parents

A very common goal is adult children wanting to cover parents in their 50s, 60s, or 70s, often for final expenses so the family is not burdened with funeral costs. This is very doable:

  • Final expense (small whole life) policies are designed for exactly this and have easier approval.
  • Parents generally need to be lawfully present and able to answer health questions (an interpreter can help).
  • You can often be the one who owns and pays for the policy on a parent, with their consent.

What about foreign medical history or short US history?

  • A shorter US history is not a dealbreaker; carriers have ways to underwrite it.
  • Health questions can be answered with help, and being honest is essential (see how claims really work).
  • Language should never be a barrier to understanding what you are signing.

Why working in your language matters

Life insurance involves real decisions, who is protected, how much, what kind. Making those decisions in a second language, under sales pressure, is how people end up with the wrong policy. You deserve to understand every word.

I help Hawaii families navigate this in English or Vietnamese, with no pressure, including non-citizen situations and coverage for parents. If that is you, check what you may qualify for or book a call and we will figure it out together.

No pressure, no medical exam for many applicants. English or Vietnamese.
