How to Find a Lost Life Insurance Policy After Someone Passes

If you think a loved one had life insurance but cannot find the paperwork, here is a step-by-step search path, including free state tools.

When a loved one passes away, families often suspect there was a life insurance policy but cannot find the documents. It is a stressful, common situation, especially when an older relative handled finances privately or there was a language barrier. Here is a calm, step-by-step way to search.

Step 1: Look through their records

Start with the obvious places:

  • Files, drawers, safes, and email for policy documents or annual statements.
  • Bank and credit card statements for premium payments to an insurance company (look for recurring payments).
  • Address book or phone for an insurance agent's contact.
  • Tax returns (interest from policies can appear).

Step 2: Check their employer and groups

  • A current or former employer may have provided group life insurance.
  • Unions, associations, or membership groups sometimes include coverage.

Step 3: Contact the agent or company

If you find any clue pointing to a company or agent, contact them directly with the death certificate and proof you are entitled to information (executor or next of kin).

Step 4: Use the free national policy locator

The NAIC Life Insurance Policy Locator is a free service that asks participating insurers to search their records for policies on a deceased person. Search "NAIC Life Insurance Policy Locator" to start a request.

Step 5: Check state unclaimed property

If a policy paid out but the money was never claimed, it may have been turned over to the state. Hawaii has an Unclaimed Property Program, and there is a national search at unclaimed.org. Search the deceased's name (and your own, while you are at it).

Step 6: Don't give up after one "no"

Records can be scattered across employers, old addresses, and multiple companies. Persistence pays off, and you have the right to investigate as the rightful beneficiary or representative.

The takeaway

A missing policy is usually findable with a methodical search: personal records → employers → the company/agent → the NAIC locator → state unclaimed property. Keep the death certificate handy, and work the list.

A simple gift to your own family: tell them your policy exists and where to find it. It prevents this exact scramble.
