What Affects Your Life Insurance Rate? The Price Recipe
Why does your quote differ from someone else's? Learn the factors that set your rate, which you can control and which you cannot.
Two people apply for the same coverage and get different prices. Why? Because life insurance pricing is a recipe, and everyone's ingredients are a little different. Once you know the recipe, the quotes stop feeling random.
Ingredients you cannot control
- Age. The single biggest factor. Age is one of the main factors carriers price on, and it is the one that only moves in one direction. This is why "I'll get to it later" is the most expensive plan.
- Sex. Actuarial life expectancy differs, which affects pricing.
- Family medical history. A history of certain conditions can matter.
Ingredients you can influence
- Tobacco/nicotine use. Smokers typically pay much more, often roughly double. Quitting (and staying quit) can move you to non-smoker rates over time.
- Health. Blood pressure, cholesterol, weight, and managed conditions all factor in. Improvements before applying can help.
- Lifestyle and occupation. High-risk hobbies or jobs can raise rates.
- Coverage amount and type. More death benefit costs more; permanent costs more than term for the same benefit.
How carriers turn this into a price
After reviewing your application (and sometimes an exam), the carrier assigns a rate class, like Preferred Plus, Preferred, Standard, or a rated class. The healthier your profile, the better the class, and the lower the price.
A key insight: carriers weigh ingredients differently
This is the part people miss. One company may be tough on a certain condition while another is lenient. That is why the same person gets different quotes from different companies, and why comparing carriers (or working with someone who does) can save real money. (More on that in why there are so many companies.)
The takeaway
You cannot change your age, so the best lever is time, applying while you are younger is the one factor still in your hands, though the premium is set by the carrier at issue. For the factors you can control, small improvements before applying can pay off for decades.
